Our History

1827: Cassa di Risparmio di Torino

The Cassa di Risparmio di Torino was established to promote saving, particularly among lower-income groups, and to devote part of its profits to charitable initiatives. Officially founded on 4 July 1827, the Savings Bank originated from the Cassa de’ Censi, Prestiti e Annualità, which had been established in 1795.

1891: Philanthropy

Philanthropy has always been one of the Savings Bank’s core missions. In 1891, the new Statute formally established the possibility of allocating part of its profits to charitable purposes, thereby contributing to the social and economic development of the local community. The following year, the first grants were approved in support of educational institutions in Turin.

1991: Fondazione CRT

Fondazione CRT was established following the Amato Law, which definitively separated banking activities from the institution’s philanthropic mission. Law No. 218 of 1990 (the Amato-Carli Law) initiated the privatisation of public banks. On 20 December 1991, the public-law entity Banca Cassa di Risparmio di Torino ceased to exist and was succeeded by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Torino and Banca CRT S.p.A., marking the definitive separation between philanthropic and social purposes on the one hand, and banking operations on the other. Fondazione CRT began its history with assets amounting to €1.1 billion.

1997: Unicredito italiano

In 1997, Fondazione CRT, then the sole shareholder of Banca CRT S.p.A., became a shareholder of Unicredito S.p.A. by contributing its entire stake in the bank to the holding company. In 1998, following the merger between the Unicredito Group and the Credito Italiano Group, the Foundation became a shareholder of UniCredito Italiano S.p.A..

1998: La Scialuppa CRT, Fondazione Antiusura

Established in 2000, the Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT was created to enrich and enhance the cultural and artistic heritage of Turin and Piedmont. The Foundation operates in the field of modern and contemporary art through the acquisition of new works and by supporting projects focused on promotion, public engagement, training and education. Its mission is to improve the provision of services and foster the growth of a social entrepreneurship ecosystem by providing adequate resources while also encouraging entrepreneurial initiative and innovation.

2017: OGR Torino

In 2013, OGR-CRT S.c.p.A. acquired the historic OGR – Officine Grandi Riparazioni complex from RFI Sistemi Urbani with the aim of restoring the former railway workshops and transforming them into a hub for creativity and innovation. Following 1,000 days of redevelopment works and an investment of more than €100 million by Fondazione CRT, OGR reopened to the public on 30 September 2017 with the inauguration of the OGR Cult area, which welcomed over half a million visitors during its first two years of activity. On 25 June 2019, the project was completed with the opening of OGR Tech, a centre dedicated to research, innovation and the acceleration of start-ups.
