Lagrange Project–Fondazione CRT: new call for 10 research fellowships in data science and social impact

Applications open until 2 February 2026 for holders of a Master’s degree in STEM fields or social sciences with skills in data science.

Applications are open until 2 February 2026 for graduates with a Master’s degree in STEM fields or social sciences with expertise in data science: 10 fellowships worth €23,000 for a one-year traineeship at ISI Foundation, in collaboration with international agencies and leading data scientists. The Lagrange Project has already supported over 800 young researchers.

ISI Foundation (Institute for Scientific Interchange) and Fondazione CRT are offering 10 Applied Research Fellowships in data science and artificial intelligence for sustainable development, public health, and social impact. The call is open to Italian and international recent graduates holding a Master’s degree (by the start of the fellowship) in STEM disciplines—such as computer science, physics, mathematics, or statistics—or in social sciences with experience in data science. The Lagrange Project–Fondazione CRT call is open until 2 February 2026.

Each fellowship, worth €23,000 gross, will enable the selected candidates to undertake a 12-month interdisciplinary traineeship at ISI Foundation’s laboratories, working alongside world-class data scientists and major international agencies. This represents a valuable opportunity both for graduates aiming for an academic career and for those interested in careers in industry or the non-profit sector.

Research activities will focus on data science and artificial intelligence applied to public health and epidemiology; computational forecasting of epidemics and pandemics using non-traditional data sources; network science for urban mobility and the future of cities; and machine learning and data analysis for humanitarian response, the study of socioeconomic inequalities, sustainable development, migration, unemployment, poverty, and information reliability. Methods will include machine learning, statistical modeling, natural language processing (NLP), and network science, applied to datasets ranging from thousands to billions of data points.

Applications

Since 2003, the Lagrange Project–Fondazione CRT has supported over 800 young researchers, with total funding exceeding €53 million—the largest investment in a scientific project under the stewardship of Fondazione CRT. Applications must be submitted by completing the online form available on the Lagrange Fellowship Call Webpage 2025/2026.

“The Lagrange Fellowships, supported by the Lagrange Project–Fondazione CRT, are not merely financial support for study: they are a direct entry into the living laboratory of data science and artificial intelligence. Over the years, those who have worked side by side with ISI Foundation researchers and the Institute’s international partner network have been able to engage firsthand with the major cultural, economic, and social challenges of our time, using data to understand them and to help drive change. It is an educational, professional, and human journey that strengthens human capital and trains a new generation of professionals capable of using data for positive social impact,” said Alessandro Vespignani, President of ISI Foundation.

“With the Lagrange Fellowships we offer young talents a unique opportunity to develop advanced skills in data science and artificial intelligence,” said Anna Maria Poggi, President of Fondazione CRT. “This call is part of Fondazione CRT’s broader path to strengthen its commitment to innovation ‘for good,’ supporting internationally-oriented research and new initiatives focused on knowledge dissemination, the enhancement of the innovation ecosystem, and technology transfer. Thanks to the collaboration with ISI Foundation and global-level scientific partners, the Lagrange Fellowships enable young researchers to apply data science and AI tools and methods in real-world contexts, helping to generate practical and meaningful solutions for society. This is the deeper meaning of our commitment: promoting innovation that improves people’s lives, strengthens human capital, and supports fair, inclusive, and responsible development for the territory.”
