THE WORLD BANK – WASHINGTON 10TH OF JUNE 2009 – GRANT MAKERS FORUM ON DISABILITY-INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT – FONDAZIONE CRT WELCOME REMARKS

Good morning and welcome to everybody.
I wish to thank the World Bank for hosting this meeting giving to us the opportunity of being in contact with a panel of spokespersons and an audience with a so high profile.
I would like now highlight to You some point that You could appreciate later in our complete presentation. I think these highlights can help me to explain why today an italian foundation is here to share its experience with yours own.
Fondazione CRT was founded in 1991. A former public owned saving bank called Cassa di Risparmio di Torino was splitted by law into two different entities: a banking company and a non profit foundation having as its fundamental asset the shares of the bank. Fondazione CRT now is a private non-profit organization totally devoted to the promotion of economic, social and cultural development of the Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta regions in Northern Italy.
Fondazione CRT has built a strong role identity characterized by the ability to “work together” – with both public and private bodies – and to cultivate the most promising experiences that arise from its territory without neglecting attention to the most innovative knowledge generated by other countries.
From 1991 to 2008 the Fondazione CRT has secured grants for a total of 1.084 million euros, 196 of which are spent in health care and protection of weaker sector of society. It has a widespread experience in the field of disability too, specially after the setting up of Vivomeglio program.
At the end of 2005, the Fondazione CRT has decided to support the 2006 IX Paralympic Winter Games in Torino with a contribution of 20 million euros – roughly equal to 50% of the budget necessary – for the Winter Paralympics enjoyed a level of organization comparable to that of the Winter Olympics.
In this decision, Fondazione CRT has done a direct involvement in the Organizing Committee and supported activities independently and directly organized to protect and promote to the highest degree the social message of the Paralympics trying to entrench their spirit in its own territory.
This was a big challenge mainly based on three risk factors, which I will show you later.
After this experience – positive and enriching – the Fondazione CRT has realised to have gathered around itself a lot of attention and totally new relationships at every level such as to merit a re-investment of this legacy, that could become a real productive asset for its own territory and a pattern suitable again in the future by others similar in new contexts.
Hence the idea of setting up a project, which is rather a way to keep alive the flame of passion that the Paralympic Games of Torino 2006 enlightened, giving access to new horizons to the work carried out so far by the Foundation: a commitment to an open, inclusive, creative and innovative society. We guess that a better social environment – on cultural, educational and service providing sides – for the person with disabilities will be a better social environment for everyone.
This exceptional involvement of a local institution in an international mainstream drives also the assumption of a sort of responsibility and desire to take part of a general movement oriented to support the implementation of the UN Convention for the Human Right of Persons with disabilities and to scout the ways followed by others entities in the world to draft its programs and activities in an inclusive perspective.
I think that the essentials of our presence today are lined up and that’s now time to start our forum. Thank you for the attention paid to this brief introductory speech and I hope You’ll enjoy a good working time!

BANCA MONDIALE – WASHINGTON, 10 GIUGNO 2009 – GRANT MAKERS FORUM ON DISABILITY-INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT – DISCORSO DI BENVENUTO DELLA FONDAZIONE

Buon giorno e benvenuti a tutti.
Vorrei ringraziare la Banca Mondiale per ospitare questo incontro, dandoci l’opportunità di restare in contatto con un gruppo di esperti con un così alto profilo.
Vorrei ora portare alla vostra attenzione alcuni punti per presentare la nostra Fondazione, punti che mi potranno aiutare a spiegare perché una fondazione italiana è qui oggi a condividere la propria esperienza con voi.
Fondazione CRT è stata fondata nel 1991 quando la Cassa di Risparmio di Torino, un istituto di credito, è stata divisa per legge in due diverse entità: una compagnia bancaria e una fondazione no-profit le cui risorse economiche sono fondamentalmente le azioni della banca. La Fondazione CRT oggi è una organizzazione no-profit totalmente dedicata alla promozione dello sviluppo economico, sociale e culturale delle regioni del Piemonte e della Valle d’Aosta.
Fondazione CRT si è costruita una identità forte, caratterizzata dall’abilità di “lavorare insieme” – sia con il settore pubblico che con quello privato – e di coltivare le realtà più promettenti del proprio territorio, senza però rinunciare all’attenzione verso le innovazioni generate dagli altri paesi.
DAl 1991 al 2008 la Fondazione CRT ha elargito fondi per un totale di 1.084 milioni di euro, 196 dei quali sono stati spesi nell’ambito della salute e della protezione delle fasce più deboli della società. Fondazione CRT ha inoltre una vasta esperienza anche nel campo della disabilità, in special modo dopo l’attuazione del programma Vivomeglio.
Alla fine del 2005, la Fondazione CRT ha deciso di sostenere i IX Giochi Olimpici Invernali di Torino 2006 con un contributo di 20 milioni di euro – all’incirca il 50% del budget necessario – per un’edizione delle Paralimpiadi che ha beneficiato di un livello di organizzazione comparabile a quello di un’Olimpiade Invernale.
In questo modo la Fondazione CRT ha avuto un coinvolgimento diretto nel Comitato Organizzatore e ha sostenuto attività, sia quelle organizzate direttamente che non, per proteggere e promuovere al più alto grado il messaggio sociale delle Paralimpiadi, cercando di intrecciare il loro messaggio al proprio territorio.
Questa è stata una grande sfida, basata principalmente su tre fattori di rischio, che vi mostrerò più tardi.
Dopo questa esperienza – positiva e arricchente – la Fondazione CRT ha realizzato di avere suscitato attorno a sé molta attenzione e nuove relazioni ad ogni livello, a tal punto da meritare un re-investimento su questa eredità, che poteva diventare una ricchezza produttiva reale per il proprio territorio così come un percorso che altre realtà simili, in contesti diversi, avrebbero potuto condividere in futuro.
Da qui l’idea di realizzare un progetto, che è un modo di tenere viva la fiamma della passione che i Giochi Paralimpici di Torino 2006 ha acceso, ma anche un’occasione di dare spazio a nuovi orizzonti rispetto al lavoro fatto: un impegno per una società aperta, inclusiva, creativa e innovativa. Siamo convinti, infatti, che un ambiente sociale migliore per le persone con disabilità- sul versante culturale come su quello educativo e dei servizi – sarà un ambiente migliore per tutti.
Il coinvolgimento eccezionale di un’istituzione locale in un evento internazionale presuppone inoltre la responsabilità e desiderio di prendere parte di un movimento generale orientato al sostegno dell’implementazione della Convenzione per i Diritti Civili delle Persone con disabilità, e di esplorare le vie seguite da altri in modo da progettare i propri programmi e le proprie attività in una prospettiva di inclusione.
Penso che la necessità della nostra presenza qui oggi sia ormai evidente, ed è ora tempo di inaugurare il nostro forum. Grazie per l’attenzione dedicata a questo breve discorso introduttivo e spero che possiate tutti apprezzare questo momento di lavoro insieme.
