The magic of words and pictures: as soon as I hear the word Paralympics, my mind goes back, along with my heart, to the adventure which took place in March 2006 and I relive the unforgettable moments, emotions which will stay with me for the rest of my life and which surface powerfully as I turn the pages of this book.
Over three years have gone by since the end of the Games, but my gratitude and that of the Organising Committee towards the CRT Foundation is still very much alive. The CRT Foundation believed strongly in the Paralympics and was by our side day by day, with the volunteers, with the athletes and with the representatives of the International Paralympic Committee. It is also thanks to the CRT Foundation that the aim of success not just for success’s sake was achieved: new athletes, new awareness and new companies, which imitated the Foundation’s example: sponsoring disabled athletes is a real opportunity, not a social duty.
But it is always with emotion that I think back to those magical days of March 2006: the streets full of smiling people, the wonderstruck eyes of audiences filled with admiration and enthusiasm by the actions of the hockey players or the breathtaking descents of visually-impaired athletes and the joy of athletes who, with or without a medal round their neck, finally found a warm, friendly and sincerely affectionate welcome in Torino.
Thank you to those who made all this possible and to those who continue to keep this glorious legacy alive.
La magia delle parole e delle immagini: appena sento la parola Paralimpiadi la mente torna indietro, assieme al cuore, all’avventura del marzo 2006 e rivive momenti indimenticati, emozioni che resteranno con me per il resto della vita, e che emergono con forza nello sfogliare le pagine di questo libro. Più di tre anni sono passati dalla fine dei giochi, ma la mia gratitudine, come quella del Comitato Organizzatore, nei confronti della Fondazione CRT è più che mai viva. La Fondazione CRT ha fortemente creduto nelle Paralimpiadi ed è stata al nostro fianco giorno dopo giorno, con i volontari, con gli atleti e i rappresentanti del Comitato Paralimpico Internazionale. Ed è anche grazie alla Fondazione CRT che il successo, non solo per amore del successo, è stato raggiunto: nuovi atleti, nuove consapevolezze, nuove aziende hanno imitato l’esempio della Fondazione: sponsorizzare atleti disabili è un’opportunità, non un dovere sociale.
Ma è sempre con emozione che penso a quei magici giorni del marzo 2006: le strade affollate di persone sorridenti, gli occhi meravigliati del pubblico pieni di entusiasmo e ammirazione per le gesta dei giocatori di hockey o le discese mozzafiato degli sciatori non vedenti e la gioia di quegli atleti che, con o senza una medaglia al collo, hanno finalmente trovato un caloroso, amichevole e sinceramente affezionato benvenuto a Torino.
Grazie a tutte le persone che hanno reso tutto questo possibile, e a tutti quelli che continuano a mantenere viva questa gloriosa eredità.
